Location

Located at the bank of river Vaigai.
125 Kms from Trichiraapalli,160 Kms from Rameswaram,160 Kms from Thirunelveli and 225 Kms from Coimbatore.
Centre of Tamilnadu state. Southern end of India.
Central hub for all towns and cities from  Villupuram to Kanyakumari.
Well connected by road, rail and air routes.

From History

Literature informs that the city was rich in culture and trading.
Civilisation flourished, seen from planned roads around temple and drainage system built long years back.
High quality Pearls, Silk, aromatic substances spices were traded those days.
Was the capital of Pandyas for a very long time.
Many literary rich  songs on Tamil language were sung here.
Silappathikaaram, Manimekalai, were centered around Madurai.
Famous poet Manickavasagam was born here who later wrote everlasting songs like Thiruvasagam (mind melting songs on God).

Kings of Madurai.

Madurai is believed to be ruled by Godess Meenakshi.   
and later by God Sundarreswarar (Siva) once Siva got married with Meenakshi.
Pandyan king regime started with King Kadungon from the year 560 from little records available..
Cholas captured and ruled from around year 850 till approximately 1216.
Pandyas got territory back from Chola Kings in the thirteenth century and ruled from AndhraPradesh upto North Srilanka.
Pandian Kingdom reached peak during reign of Maaravarman Sundarapandian and Jatavarman Sundarapandian
During the period of Nayakkar kings many temples were renovated all over.
Mogul kings ruled till invasion of British.
The city was under British regime for three hundred years from sixteenth century till independence.
